"He has to see on his own behalf and in his own way the relations between means and methods employed and results achieved.  Nobody else can see for him, and he can't see just by being 'told,' although the right kind of telling may guide his seeing and thus help him to see what he needs to see."
--John Dewey

The  Secret  of  What  You   Believe

Many of my clients ask me to help them achieve success at a high level, but what I find is that they do not believe this success is possible.  Their core beliefs tell them "no, it is just wishful thinking to believe that one day _____________ (fill in the blank),"   When we talk in-depth about their life situation, the arena where they desire this new level of success, I find that their approach is more superstitious than anything else.  Let me explain.

We all have grown up in a world that is unpredictable, uncertain, capricious, and dangerous.  As children, we adopt a system of thinking, called a paradigm or worldview, which is designed to factor out as much of the uncertainty and danger as possible.  The problem with this is obvious-- there is nothing that we can do to control the world.  The beginning of realizing steep, forward progress, personally or professionally or both, is to identify these beliefs that color the world we live in.

The secret is to identify your core belief structure.  This is not an easy task, but you can begin to do this by following these steps:

  • Ask these questions of yourself, then record your answers in a personal journal or daytimer:  1.  What belief about my job led me to pursue this career?  2.  What belief about the opposite sex led me into my current marriage or significant relationship?  3. What do I believe is the purpose of my life?  Why am I here?

  • Ask a friend to answer these same three questions for you, what they believe you would answer, then record your answers in a journal or daytimer.  Choose a friend who is not afraid to tell you the truth.

  • Next, answer this question: if I could do anything and be guaranteed that I would not fail, and resources were not a concern, what would I do (answer in 75 words or less)?  Then, answer this question: what will it cost me emotionally, transformationally (changes in my character, motivation, etc.), financially, and spiritually to place my highest pursuit at the top of my list?

  • Finally, write your goal on a transparency (you can also use clear plastic wrap by taping it down as you write with a sharpy marker).  Keep the goal simple.  For example, "Spend significant time with my teenage kids over the next year," "Increase profits in my business 30%," or "Organize my life toward 100% order."

  • Then, place the transparency over the answers to the questions above.  Though it sounds like a strange activity, what I have found happens with clients is that they find new connections between their goals for success and their belief structures.  A deep, forward-leaning motivation is ignited when you see the connection between what you believe and what you are working toward.  Adjustments in your worldview are now possible.  You will find yourself changing because you now see the connection between what you want and what you believe.  Try it, then let me know how it works!
